Sketches and photographs of paintings, 1857-1947, 1947 (bulk date).

Most of the collection consists of photographs of paintings, both portraits and landscapes, painted by Junius Sloan. The images were collected by J. Carson Webster, perhaps in preparation for his article on Sloan which was published in volume 40 of Art in America. In addition there are copies of photographs of Junius and Sara Spencer Sloan, photos of two calligraphic drawings, and photos of the letterhead for the Spencerian Business College in Washington, D.C. Of particular interest in the collection is a piece of stationery bearing three sketches by Sloan, one of a man, dated Sept. 1857; another labeled as being the mother of William Cullan Bryant; and the third being a cavalryman galloping on his horse. A poem is written on the back of the stationery.
